What's a hostel?
It's a shared accommodation for
travelers. All hostels offer
bunkrooms, which are usually
thecheapest option in town.
Manyhostels also offer private
rooms, but rarely with private
bathrooms. In such a case, the
traveler is still sharing lounge and
kitchen. "Life," proposes the
Canadian Youth Hostel
Association, "is too short to sleep
alone."
Those who enjoy hostels
usually also like talking to people,
meeting other travelers, and limited
television viewing. They generally
don't like the sterility of hotel
chains(but don't want to break
the budget with a B&B) and
prefer a little personal attention
from the hostel manager--who is
usually a local and
is able to suggest the best
restaurants, walks, and tours.
She might even
cook some regional cuisine for you.
Hostels are much more common in
Europe and Oceania than in North
America. Even so, there are 500
hostels in the U.S. and Canada. The
closest ones to Charleston are in
Savannah, GA, Myrtle Beach, SC,
Athens, GA, Greensboro, NC and
Atlanta. There are multiple hostels in
Tennessee and Florida.
NotSo Hostel is the first hostel in
Charleston and proud to be
introducing this friendly and fun form
of accommodation to the area.
